Up In Smoke
A lawyer purchased a box of expensive cigars and insured them
against fire, amongst other things. After a month, and having smoked all the
cigars, the lawyer filed a claim on the insurance policy stating that the cigars
had been lost in a series of 'small fires'. The Insurance Company refused to
pay, citing the obvious reason, that the cigars had been smoked in the normal
fashion.
The lawyer sued and won, and although the Judge agreed that the case was
frivolous, he said that according to the letter of the law, the Insurance
Company HAD agreed to insure the cigars and that he (the Judge) did not want to
define what was an unacceptable fire. Rather than go through a lengthy and
costly law suit, the Insurance Company paid out $15000.
HERE'S THE RUB......
After the lawyer cashed the cheque, the Insurance Company sued him for arson !
With his own insurance claim and testimony, the lawyer was convicted of
intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 2 years in jail
and fined $24000 !
